Perhaps the hardest part of going green and adopting the use of reusable bags is relaying your new found identity to others. While grocery tote bags are growing in popularity, plastic continues to dominate the checkout stands. If you have been using cloth grocery bags for any amount of time, you are starting to realize that most trips to the store involve “explaining yourself.” The following tips are designed to help you (and the cashier) transition from plastic to green at a moment’s notice.

Speak Up

Before the cashier begins to ring up your groceries, politely smile and present your reusable bags. With this action, state that you would like to use your cloth grocery bags instead of plastic.

Offer to Help

Using your reusable bags might not be received well, especially if the cashier is busy or has already faced a long day. Unlike plastic bags, which are already setup to fill, your reusable bags require extra attention. Offer to help the cashier or courtesy clerk by hanging the reusable bags on the bag racks or even load the bags yourself.

Break the Ice

It has long been said that people don’t like change. Moving from plastic to green is no exception. Cashiers are likely to find the use of reusable bags time consuming and a hassle. Some may not like it simply because it is something new. If the cashier appears stressed strike up a conversation and throw in a sincere compliment. He or she will be more receptive to you and your green bags.

Be Consistent

If you shop at the same store on a regular basis, try using the same cashier. As the cashier grows familiar with your visits (and bags) using your cloth grocery bags will become easier for everyone involved.

Being a reusable bag is not always easy, but it is definitely worth it. With time and education, the general population will become familiar with the green movement. Until then, it is our responsibility to politely turn down plastic for an environmentally better option.
