In a May 2009 report the Canadian Plastics Industry Association released a study on reusable grocery totes that reinforces the importance of washing your reusable bags. According to the study, more than 30 percent of reusable shopping bags tested positive for bacterial contamination. In addition, 40 percent of the bags tested had mold or yeast and even intestinal fecal bacteria embedded on the bags.

The study stated, “The unacceptable presences of colioforms, that is, intestinal bacteria, in some of the bags suggests that all meat should be double-packed in a first-use bag to prevent accidental leakage or drips into the reusable bags.”

This study brings up a good point that all grocery tote bag users should pay attention to. The more one uses his or her reusable bags, the more they are exposed to germs, dirt and other hidden culprits.

Unfortunately the reusable bag movement has no established guidelines when it comes to keeping your bags clean and safe. While most of us can put up with a little unsightly dirt, deadly germs are another story.

When purchasing a reusable shopping bag, look for a washable product. Mesh, dark colored bags are best for holding up in the wash and maintaining their appearance. Beware of cheaper, canvas bags that quickly breakdown in the wash.

If you use environment bags on a regular basis, it is a good idea to wash them often. Pay special attention to the bags. If they appear dirty even after a single use, it is probably a good idea to throw it in the laundry.

Most mesh bags can be washed with cold or warm water on a gentle cycle with comparable fabrics. Hang dry your bags as they will last longer and you won’t waste precious energy by running the dryer.

If you want to play it extra safe, ask the cashier to pre-bag any meat items before they are placed into the reusable grocery bags.
